Emerge Fractional Laser

The Emerge fractional Laser is used in dermatological procedures requiring coagulation of soft tissue and skin resurfacing procedures. The laser uses micro-beams to create areas of treated tissue surrounded by untreated tissue. It allows the body's natural healing process to rebuild tissue with new collagen and elastin. Used mainly for treatment of wrinkles, fine lines, improve tone and texture, treatment of scars and stretch marks.

Skin rejuvenation is done with minimal downtime. Some redness and swelling may occur after treatment but this will settle within 1-2 days. Any area of the face and body can be treated particularly stretch marks.

Generally 2-3 passes are performed, this is determined by your skin type. Apart of a red face, some clients may experience dry, flaky skin- this is the shedding of old cells. A post treatment facial with Hyaluronic mask is recommended 2 weeks post treatment. Emerge fractional laser works best over 3-6 treatments. 

Emerge treatments can improve your skin making it look flawless and more youthful. Results will depend on how many treatments are performed.

Belkyra - Fat Dissolving Double Chin Treatment

Ever worried about a double chin, and hate being in photos because of it? Then worry no more as this can be treated with Belkyra - a fat dissolving treatment that will reduce the size of your chin permanently.

Excess fat or double chin occurs in all body types. No matter how much exercise one does or how well they eat it will not go away. This can have a negative effect on a persons well being.

Belkyra (Kybella in the USA) was formulated in the U.S and released in Australia early this year. The product is based on a synthetic substance in our body called deoxycholic acid which breaks down the fat cells resulting in a permanent destruction and removal of fat cells.

A thorough consultation with the doctor is done to assess for suitability. The injection area is marked out with a pencil and the amount of injections used depends on the size of the chin. Usually 2-4 treatments are needed for most people but this can vary. The whole procedure can take from 20-40 minutes. The treatments are spaced 4-6 weeks apart. Most people will start to see some improvement after the 1st treatment.

Client will experience some swelling and discomfort in the first few days of treatment but this will subside over a one week period.

Women's Hair Loss

We will all develop some degree of hair loss as we age. It is not just men that develop hair loss, women experience it as well. It is expected that men lose their hair but not women. When women start to experience hair loss they can suffer from self esteem, body image, feeling of unattractiveness which can impact on their social life. It is mostly common in menopausal women.

In women, hair starts to thin mainly on the top, noticing a widening through the center hair part. Hair loss is characterized by the hair follicles becoming smaller, producing shorter, thinner and eventually stop producing hair.

Hair is made of protein so what we eat can effect the health or loss of our hair. Maintaining a healthy diet will improve the quality of your hair but may not effect the hair loss. Emotional stress can impact on our body's production of various hormones like adrenaline and testosterone. Other contributing factors leading to hair loss in women include hormone changes such as pregnancy and menopause.  Excessive use of hairdryers hair dyes, straighteners and perms can also cause hair loss.

There are some solutions that can be used to promote hair growth which can be purchased over the counter. Dr Scott also has a solution which is slightly stronger that the chemist brand and needs to be made up at a Compounding pharmacy with a prescription.

The solution is applied morning and night and results will be visible after approximately 3 months. The solution can reduce or slowdown the hair loss and in some cases stimulate partial regrowth. Most of the time the problem of hair loss is treatable. Men's treatment of hair loss can vary to women's treatment.

Lip Augmentation

Lip Augmentation is a cosmetic procedure to increase the size and volumise your lips, making them more fuller and attractive. Lip augmentation can also be used to treat smokers lines (fine vertical lines around the lip area) in older women. The substance used to inject into the lips is called Hyaluronic acid, a natural substance that already exists in the body. It is a temporary filler which can last between 6-12mths, depends on your body's metabolism. Around the 6 month period is ideal to get the lips re done to keep the volume and shape as desired.

There are many Hyaluronic acid products on the market. The main thing is to make sure that the one that you will be getting is Therapeutic Goods Administration approved. They all give similar results and some contain lignocaine, a local anesthetic. Make sure you inform the practitioner if you are allergic to Lignocaine.

A numbing cream is applied onto the lip area so that the procedure can be performed with minimal discomfort. A series of small injections is done into the lip area delivering the gel to shape and volumise the lips. Your lips will be a little swollen at first, but you'll see the effects of the fillers pretty quickly. Give your lips 24-48 hours to settle and the swelling to calm. Then you'll be seeing your filled-out lips as they will be for the next few months. 

The procedure can take up to about 1 hour including the application of the numbing cream. You can go about your daily life afterwards but shouldn't make any big plans or attend special events for the next 3-5 days in case of bruising.  Some slight bruising and bleeding at the injection site is normal and expected. The bruises will fade after 3-5 days. Avoid excessive exercises that increase blood flow to your face, and also facials and massages for about 24 hours.

Benefits of Hyaluronic acid fillers - the filler injected supports and shapes the tissues surrounding the lips. The amount injected can be controlled which enables how much volume is created.

As the numbing cream wears off, lips may feel tender. All minor discomforts are short lived and gone within a week. Pain relief such as Panadol can be taken.

Skin Cancer Check

If you are Anglo Saxon background, European background, fair-skinned, fair hair, blue or green eyes, history of skin cancers and have been in the sun a lot then you should have regular skin checks for signs of skin cancer. The sooner a skin cancer is identified and treated the better chance of avoiding surgery or in the worst case, Melanoma. Lets face it we all love how the sun feels on our bodies after a swim but precautions must always be taken.

A yearly check up with a skin doctor is very important but it is just as important to know your own skin and what is normal if any changes occur. Don't just rely on yearly checks, noticing unusual spots or changes in shape, color or size of skin spots can also save you trauma.

Making a habit of regularly checking your skin for new spots or changes to freckles and moles is very important. You will need to stand in front of a mirror and check your entire body as skin cancers can sometimes occur in parts of the body that are not exposed to the sun. Get a friend or partner to check your back for you.

There are 3 types of skin cancers:

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) -makes up to 2/3 of non-melonoma skin cancers. Commonly develop on the head, neck and upper body. May appear as a pearly lump or dry area. They can bleed and ulcerate. They grow slowly and don't usually spread. If untreated it can grow deeper into the skin and damage nearby tissues.

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) - makes up to 1/3 of non-melonoma skin cancers. Usually appear on the skin that is most often exposed to the sun, eg head, hands, forearms. Appears as a thickened red scaly lump. SCC grow quickly over several weeks and can spread to other parts of the body.

Melanoma - only 1-2% of cases, it is the least common but the most serious. Melanoma appears as a black spot with irregular edge and surface, it may appear brown, black, blue, red, white or light grey. If left untreated it can spread deeper into the skin and carried through the lymph vessels to other parts of the body.

Sun exposure is the cause of 99% of non melanoma skin cancers making sun protection the biggest preventative factor. By following these 5 simple steps you can minimize your risk from skin cancer.

1- wear protective clothing.

2- use 50+ sunscreens, apply a thick layer of sunscreen and reapply every 2 hours.

3- wear a broad brimmed hat to protect you face, neck, ears and eyes.

4- sit under shade.

5- wear sunglasses to protect your eyes from UV radiation.

Hyaluronic Acid Mask has many benefits. HA is naturally found in the body, it secures moisture and creates fullness, giving you a more youthful looking skin. Dermal fillers are used for a variety of reasons relating to the facial ageing. It is a non invasive procedure. The filler is injected into the skin to help fill in facial wrinkles, add volume to the face, and plump up lips. The filler restores skin elasticity giving you a youthful and smoother appearance. Depending on the type of filler, the effects can last anywhere from 6 months to 18 months. In Australia you need to be a Medical Practitioner or Registered Nurse with Cosmetic Injection training to be able to inject Dermal fillers.

At YourSkin Clinic we use 2 types of fillers, Hyaluronic acid (HA) and Calcium hydroxylapatite (CH). The HA's that we use are Restylane and Princess, the CH's that we use is Radiesse. Both are TGA approved, and both substances are found in the human body. It is best to have a consultation with either the Doctor or Nurse to decide which product will be suitable for you and which area of the face is to be treated.

As it is a medical procedure there is always going to be risk involved. It is important to choose an injector with experience and one that you feel comfortable with. Some common risk are bruising, redness, pain or tenderness. They generally subside within 1 week. You may also get some lumpiness which may take a bit longer to subside.

Dermal fillers can be started at any age to correct the signs of ageing. They improve the appearance of deep and fine lines and give the skin a more supple, youthful appearance.

Skin Tags

Skin tags are harmless growths on the skin that can vary in numbers. The tiny pieces of tissue are composed of blood vessels and a type of protein fiber called collagen. They can develop on any part of the body but most commonly grow on areas of high friction, for eg, neck, breast, groin, stomach, eyelids and underarms. Males and females are equally prone to getting skin tags.

Researchers don't know why skin tags grow. The believe that friction may be the leading cause. Skin tags also appear to run in families and researchers suspect that genetics might play a role in the development.

If you need to confirm the presence of a skin tag or any other growth, the best thing to do is to see your doctor or Dr David Scott at YourSkin Clinic. Sometimes what looks like a skin tag is actually a mole, wart or other types of harmless growth. The doctor may want to take a biopsy to make sure the growth isn't malignant or cancerous.

Skin tags don't usually require treatment and don't cause any discomfort unless their location causes them to rub against clothes. In these cases it is ideal to have them removed as constant rubbing against clothes can cause irritation to the skin tag. Most people want skin tags removed for cosmetic reasons.

Removing skin tags is a low risk procedure. However they can bleed during removal. At YourSkin clinic skin tag removal is a common procedure performed by Dr Scott. A thorough examination is performed and then removed by diathermy.

You should never try to remove skin tags at home as their is the risk of bleeding and infection.

Seborrheic Keratosis

Seborrheic keratosis is a very common harmless, usually pigmented noncancerous growth on the skin. It usually appears on the shoulders, chest or face but can also appear anywhere on the skin. They are also known as basal cell papillomas or seborrheic warts. They tend to appear from middle age onwards, some people may have one or several.

Their appearance is wart like or moles. They start off as small rough bumps which gradually get thicker and develop a warty appearance. They are brown in colour, some can be in various shades between black and white. They may itch but are not painful. They can appear flat or a raised papule, 1mm to several cm in diameter.

Causes of seborrheic keratosis are unknown. It is estimated that over 90% of adults over 60 years old have one or more of them. Researchers have noted that they can develop-

:after sunburn or dermatitis, skin friction in body folds, or arise from Solar lentigo.

Diagnosing them should be done by a skin doctor after a visual and physical examination. Sometimes it can look like skin cancer, if so the doctor will take a biopsy to confirm the diagnosis.

Seborrheic keratosis can be easily removed. Most people want them removed as they are unsightly, itchy or catch on clothes. There are several ways in removing them. Dr Scott at YourSkin clinic removes them with a diathermy. After it has been removed, the skin in that area may be lighter and also some surrounding skin. In time this usually fades but not always. In the majority of cases the growth does not return but new ones may appear on other parts of the body.

At YourSkin Clinic we use Advanced Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs), Lactic Acid peels. These peels correct the skins dryness, suppleness by signalling cells to make Hyalaronic acid (HA), our skin cells natural moisture substance. A unique combination of Lactic acid and essential skin antioxidant vitamins helps normalise skin exfoliation and renewal rate to return the skin to a more youthful healthy appearance. AHA's can cause sun sensitivity and should always be used with a SPF 15 plus. Additionally wearing a wide brim hat should be used.

There may be some mild stinging or irritation when first applied however this sensation should disappear within several minutes and usually subsides after several uses.

Within a few weeks of using these peels your skin should begin to look and feel smoother, younger and healthier. Should start to see visible results after 2-6 weeks depending on the condition of the skin prior to using Priori Advanced AHA's peels. Lactic acid peels can be done weekly for faster results.

At YourSkin Clinic we take pride in making people look good for their age. Its about growing old gracefully but doing so with a little help along the way.

The following are my tips on how we can achieve this and it is also something that I have followed through myself.

We all know that eating a well balanced diet keeps us healthy on the inside and outside. We should eat plenty of fruit and vegetables including adequate amounts of carbohydrates, fats and proteins. Drink at least 6-8 glasses of water a day. A good diet gives us the energy to lead an active lifestyle. Exercise also helps us in maintaining a youthful figure.

Cleansing with the right cleanser is a good start, and exfoliating the skin 2-3 times a week. Exfoliation not only washes away dead skin but helps in the production of new cells. Regular exfoliation can give you a smoother, brighter and firmer skin. Moisturising with the right moisturiser is also important as your skin can get drier as you get older.

Always protect the skin from sun damage by wearing sunscreen, and a big hat when going in the sun. Prevention is always better than cure.
